Dissociation constant formula
The dissociation constant (Ka) is a measure of the strength of an acid in a solution. It is defined as the equilibrium constant for the dissociation reaction of an acid in water. The dissociation constant formula is:
Ka = [H+][A-]/[HA]
Where:
- [H+] is the concentration of hydrogen ions (protons) in the solution
- [A-] is the concentration of the conjugate base of the acid
- [HA] is the concentration of the undissociated acid.
In other words, the dissociation constant is equal to the product of the concentrations of the hydrogen ions and the conjugate base, divided by the concentration of the undissociated acid. A higher value of Ka indicates a stronger acid, while a lower value indicates a weaker acid. The units of Ka depend on the units of the concentrations used in the formula.
